The contract of Knysna’s acting municipal manager, Dawid Adonis, has been extended by a further three months.
The decision was taken at a special council meeting on Friday.
Adonis’s first three months at the helm were due to come to an end on Sunday.
His appointment was the subject of debate at two special council meetings this week after the appointment of an acting accounting officer was withdrawn from the agenda of Wednesday’s council meeting at the 11th hour, with no reasons given to councillors.
At the time, ANC chief whip Claudine Croutz proposed that the item be withdrawn.
Adonis has been acting municipal manager for the past three months while disciplinary proceedings against the incumbent, Dr Sitembele Vatala, were under way.
Vatala, who had been suspended over allegations of maladministration, corruption and fraud, subsequently resigned and the council accepted his resignation on August 25.
On Friday, mayor Elrick van Aswegen, of COPE said: “I would like to appoint Mr Dawid Adonis for an additional three months.”
ANC councillor Mncedisi Skosana, said: “I am seconding the name for the three months, speaker.”
Council speaker Mertle Gombo announced that Adonis would stay on as acting municipal manager for three months.
